I'm asking because I know someone who was told that they were adopted and they're "adoptive parents" were getting paid. This person got health insurance through the state she lived in and her parents received a monthly check of over $50 from that state. Was she really adopted or was she a foster child? Is there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems?Yes, if you adopt through the foster care system, you can get an adoption subsidy. This could range anywhere from a very small amount to a few hundred dollars depending on a child's special needs. The parents can also keep the child's medical card until the child turns 18. In fact, when I took my classes, we were *highly* encouraged to keep the medical card because there is a disparity with insurance companies when it comes to how much insurance companies are willing to pay for mental health services. And since the state knows that these children are going to continue to need care, they want to make sure that the child still is on a medical card so that the child can continue to get therapy.
So, yes the other person was telling the truth. However, this various from state to state. Some states are more generous than others. Is there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems?
Yes, she was probably adopted after being a foster child. "special needs" as it refers to adoption can include the child's age, race, and length of time they've been in care. Even if a child has no medical, developmental, or behavioral issues they would be considered a special needs adoption if they have been in care over a year, if they are over 3yrs old, or if they are a racial minority in the area of their adoption. Medicaid would be continued for them until 18 as well as a stipend from the state monthly. Is there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems? Some states do provide incentives for people to adopt children. This very well could be the case. I know the state I live in has incentives similar to that in certain cities where there are a lot of children that need to be adopted. It's probably cheaper for these states to provide the incentive rather than keep kids in foster care.
The average cost for a foster care placement per month can be hundreds of dollars for foster parents (plus payment to social workers that have to check on them) to thousands for children community based programs/group homes (plus payment to social workers to monitor them). Health insurance and $50 is way cheaper. Is there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems?
The $50 from the state is probably funding for her to receive extra support such as adoption counseling, or for her parents to provide a higher level of care if she had any extra needs (even emotionally).
If she was adopted from the foster care system, they still help support their children after adoption by supporting their new parents in a variety of ways, including financially. Is there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems?I am a foster parent, being with my agency was first tiem i ever heard of that if we adopted a child we had in care we would get a certian amount each day ( less then what you get while they are foster child) , and they give you option of keeping them on state insurance, or on your insurance, or both... not sure how other agencies are or states etc... but thats how it is in Pa and with our agancy n e way... i havnt adopted yet, i mgiht someday.. hopefully somedayIs there a such thing as getting money for adopting a child who doesn't have problems?
In NY, there is an adoption subsidy for those who adopt through foster care, and this is applies to non-special needs children too. And it is common for adopted children (foster care adoption) to continue to receive Medicaid or other state health insurance.
Our state continues to provide an adoption stipend even years after the adoption is finalized.
