What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?

My boyfriend and I argue that some coverage is needed to some degree as our health care system is jacked up, but I argue that our entire culture has to change to make it viable.

For example, the government would have to turn from things they foster like sodas in schools and sugar snack commercials during child programming. Give me some of your obstacles. If you think we don't need universal health care, give me your opinions on making it better and more affordable. What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?The biggest obstacle is that most of the American public seem completely oblivious to the fact that National Healthcare is not an "either/or" proposal, but would exist in tandem with private healthcare; if you have kidney stones, under the "free" (taxpayer-supported) system you'll have to wait until after they fix the lady with the brain hemorrhage, but you are always at liberty to pay for private care, just as you are now.

As soon as the old farts in Congress start to spend away the riches their children thought they would inherit, we'll have "reform", LOL!What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?
One word - profit.

HMO's, hospitals, drug companies etc are all private businesses and as such have to make money for their shareholders.

Government run healthcare (like the fire department or post office) does not seek to make a profit. Profit should be irrelevant to health care.

Profit is why Americans pay more than anyone else for healthcare that is inadequate, and have high child mortality rate and lower average lifespan. Look at Canada, Japan and Europe.

The things you mention like junk food in schools and commercials are a big problem, but not really an obstacle to universal healthcare. What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?AS ONE PERSON ON HERE ALREADY SAID HMO;S. AND WE DO NEED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.LOOK AT MEXICO ONE OF THE POOREST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD.YET THEY HAVE SOME KIND OF HEALTH PLAN FOR THEIR PEOPLE.JUST ABOUT EVER COUNTRY HAS A HEALTH CARE PROGRAM RUN BY THE GOVERNMENT.EXCEPT THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD THE UNITES STATES.YET WE CAN SPEND 555 BILLION DOLLARS ON A WAR THAT IS;NT GOING ANY WHERE.YET CAN;T HAVE A NATIONAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM IN THIS COUNTRY.IT;S NOT THAT WE CAN;T IT;S THAT THE POLITICIANS WON;T PUT ONE INTO ACTION.THAT WOULD MAKE THE RICH AND POWERFUL ONES UNHAPPY.WE PAY ENOUGH IN TAXES.WHY DON;T THE POLITICIANS GIVE BACK THE BIG PAY RAISES THEY VOTED THEMSELVES IN A FEW YEARS AGO.WHY DON;T WE STOP PAYING FOR THEIR HEALTH CARE THAT THEY GET FREE OF CHARGE OFF THE TAX PAYERS.IF WE CAN;T HAVE IT THEN WHY SHOULD THEY BE ALLOWED TO GET IT FREE OF CHARGE.WE ARE GIVING FREE MEDICAL ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ.BUT CAN;T GIVE OUR OWN PEOPLE MEDICAL ATTENTION FREE.AND THE TAX PAYERS ARE PAYING FOR THE IRAQ PEOPLE.What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?
Competition, Competition, Competition. We need more of it to improve quality and decrease cost. While I believe in assisting the less fortunate, I don't believe in all out Universal healthcare. Ask any Doctor, they would love to put a sign outside their office saying, "office visits- 30$". This would force other Doctors to compete in a market based economy. They can't do this because there is a layer of bureaucracy between the patient and the Doctor called Medicare and Insurance. What do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?The biggest problem would be just like SSI, the Feds borrow from it and never pay it back. At this point in time there is talk ab out "fixing" SSI, If the Feds would pay back the three Trillion Dollars it has borrowed from SSI, it wouldn't need "fixed". WANT PROOF? Go to the Federal building in Parkersburg, W.Va. and you can see all the worthless IOU"sWhat do you think are obstacles to national health care in the U.S.?
HMOs, insurance companies
Constitution, HMO's, Insurance company, Private hospitals, Pharma companies, people in general.
