What are the limits on inter-species breeding?

I have just come out of a crisis meeting with some investors in a business I'm trying to start up. In the heat of the moment I may have told them a couple of things that I'm not 100% sure of. I thought I would ask here to check...

1. Is it possible to breed a dog with a parrot?

2. Is there any reason why the resulting animal would not make a decent household pet?

Serious answerers only please: if this pans out, we'll make a fortune in talking dogs. If it doesn't, it's very likely that I'm going to go to jail when these guys audit the books. What are the limits on inter-species breeding? You can throw a lady dog and a boy parrot in a sack and see what happens. Be sure to play Barry White to get them in the mood. Do you think the dog would lay an egg? hehehe. That'd be awesome. What are the limits on inter-species breeding?
It worked! Who would have thought?

Would love to tell you all the details but I have to go and take Squawky for a walk.

What are the limits on inter-species breeding?Invest in something else, because genetic manipulation is expensive and not easy! An example of inter-species breeding may include breeding a donkey and a horse. The result is a mule, which cannot successfully breed with another mule. There are two completely different organizations of genomic DNA in the two species. What are the limits on inter-species breeding?
Different species do not interbreed. For species as different as a parrot and a dog, the egg cell simply would not fertilize. For closer species, the embryo would not develop. You're not going to get talking dogs. Good luck in jail. What are the limits on inter-species breeding?there are several conditions to breeding creatures together:

1. There is no significant size difference. (a rat giving birth to an elephant is a physical impossibility)

2. The genetalia must be compatable. (snails have different genetalia to a snake)

3. Chromosomes must be compatable. (not all creatures have the same amount of chromosome, and not all have X/Y sex chromosomes)

4. The birthing environment must be healthy for the foetus. (chickens are not desined to be born in a womb, humans are not designed for being born in an egg)

5. The Ovum must accept the sperm. (The Ova sometimes have proteins that reject the sperm that does not match the required criteria)

So you see you will not get a talking dog... sorry! What are the limits on inter-species breeding?
No its no, there is a limet because there has to be the same number of chromosomes
I assume you mean is it possible to combine chromozones of the two species to create a hybrid that would have certain chosen characteristics of each - correct? If you mean "breed" technically that is just inserting the sperm of one into the egg of the other - the answer is definately NO.

With genetic engineering almost anything is possible - so I would never say never - it is possible to strip the DNA and isolate certain strands or genes themselves - the biggest problem is to combine DNA from one species to another the two strands of the double helix have to have a match on each side - look at it like a big zipper with each gene being lock and a key. Each gene has to have a gene on the other strand of the DNA in the right place that will lock into the DNA on the other strand - just like a zipper - but in the case of genes, EACH individual gene also has to match the gene on the other side of the zipper. So there are multiple problems as you see. Also as the first responder correctly said - the number of genes in each DNA strand much also match. You also would have to isolate the Genes tha would produce the desired characteristics. Even with all of this it might never work for any one of a million reasons! I would never say never though when it comes to genetic engineering just say M-O-N-E-Y and lots of time.

To make a smarter dog that would have the physical vocal ability to repeat sounds like a parrot does would likely be easier by selective breeding - this also would take lots of money and lots of time. There are dogs now that can "parrot" sounds they hear and they do make noises specific to certain things or stimuli - so this also is not impossible.

A decent household pet? GEEZZZ I guess that would be up to the person - I would love to have a dog that would be able to make sounds that are people sounds - but really I just would like to know what they are thinking - I think we are a long way from that unless you believe the "dog psychic" on TV!.

I hope this is serious enough for you - I really would not be worried about going to jail over this unless you perpetrated a fraud. If you actually guaranteed that you could make a talking dog and took money from investors in the form of a security such as stock or a limited partnership without disclosing the risks of the investment then you may have a potential for trouble but really now........ watch out far a call from the SEC though.
