At home insemination is not thought to be any more effective than having sexual intercourse . . . timed right, a healthy couple has a 20 - 25% chance of success with well-timed insemination per cycle. Here is a good link for how-to info:

If sperm count or motility is an issue, an IUI would be more effective (but also more expensive). An IUI is different because they wash the sperm leaving behind the best swimmers, use a catheter to inject the semen into your cervix (you cannot do this at home due to needing medical experience and the sperm sample must be properly prepared to avoid infections). Having the sperm in your cervix is getting it much closer to where it needs to go.
Hope this helps! What does a man's sperm count need to be in order to have a successful at home inter vaginal insemenation?I don't think the sperm count really matters, it just depends if the sperm are lazy or not. It only takes one!
